Faith & Baseball: Life after the Twins

Cordel Leonard “Corey” Koskie (born June 28, 1973) is a Canadian former professional baseball third baseman, who played in Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, and Milwaukee Brewers. On February 4, 2015, Koskie was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Koskie, who was a popular teammate, clubhouse leader and noted team prankster, was at the center of the early 2000s “Renaissance Twins” that won three consecutive American League Central division titles in 2002, ’03 and ’04.

He wore a Twins uniform from 1998-2004 and from 2001-04, hit .272 with 127 doubles, nine triples, 80 home runs, 312 RBI, 266 walks, 315 runs scored and an .837 OPS — among Twins hitters in that span, he led in walks, ranked second in RBI and doubles, was third in homers and runs scored, fourth in hits and fifth in triples. He is the club’s all-time leader among third basemen in batting average (.280) and fielding percentage (.966), and is one of just six Twins to drive in 100 runs and score 100 runs in one season (2001). Koskie ranks third in Twins history in games played at third base (762), ranks 11th on the club’s all-time position player list in fWAR (23.2) and first in defensive runs above average (36.6).

Koskie, a proud Manitoba, Canadian native, was selected by the Twins in the 26th round of the 1994 First-Year Player Draft and spent seven of his nine big league seasons in Minnesota. He won the Carl R. Pohlad Award for Outstanding Community Service in 2001 and the Kirby Puckett Award for Outstanding Alumni Community Service in 2018 and still makes Minnesota his home, while remaining very involved in the Twin Cities community. Even in retirement, Koskie can still occasionally be found on town ball fields in around the Twin Cities, taking the field alongside some combination of his four sons.
